NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Awareness.

The award aims to provide candidates with an understanding of dementia, the functioning of the brain, and the memory process.
Encourage candidates to use a person-centred approach in order to understand emotions and behaviours they may find challenging.
Promote the application of person-centred principles to everyday care activities.
Provide employers with a structured training programme which will meet the training needs of their employees and facilitate career development.

The course consists of 4 mandatory units.

Summary and content of The Course

Unit 01 - Understanding dementia:
This unit introduces candidates to the term ‘dementia’ and provides an explanation of the various causes of dementia, in particular Alzheimer’s disease. Candidates will gain an understanding of how the brain links to emotions and behaviours.

Unit 02 - Understanding person-centred care:
This unit will provide candidates with the best ways to communicate with people with a dementia to ensure that they feel comfortable in their surroundings. Candidates will be able to demonstrate their listening skills and learn the importance of relationships and teamwork to a person with dementia.

Unit 03 - Understanding and responding to behaviour you might find challenging:
In this unit candidates will explore the different forms of behaviour and the factors that affect behaviour in someone with a dementia. The candidates will also learn how to deal with challenging behaviour.

Unit 04 - Applying a person-centred approach to personal care:
This unit will enable candidates to practice applying person-centred care and how to support a person with dementia with specific aspects of their personal care. Candidates will be able to effectively assess the best approach at mealtimes, during activities and be able to assess the living environment.
